The Data Discovery Map
This map shows what data is present in SCEDC archives for a given station. To be displayed on this map, a station must have at least one of the following asset types present in the archive: continuous waveforms, event windowed waveforms, or labeled seismic phase arrival from SCSN processing. Use this map to see what data can be accessed from the archive.
Important notes
-
The application has been tested on Firefox, Chrome and Safari browsers. There is a known issue with vertical scrolling of the Control Panel on Chrome.
-
The data that populates this map is updated once a day at 12 am PST.
How filter selections are applied
All selected conditions are AND'ed. At least one selection must be made for each filter. For e.g. not selecting any sensor type is an error condition because the result set will be empty.
Tools
Click on Tools bar to show/hide the Control Panel and Station List menus.
-
Control Panel manages which stations are displayed on the map based on the filters below:
- Legend - Uncheck Legend checkbox to remove from map (or click “x” on corner of Legend box). Restore Legend box by clicking “Display Legend” checkbox in Control Panel.
-
Networks - FDSN Network codes (https://www.fdsn.org/networks/).
Select any number of networks in the drop down list; choose multiple networks using Ctrl or Shift keys. Press Submit button to show stations with selected network codes. Choosing multiple networks displays a merged view of the stations, e.g., if “CI” and “AZ” are selected, then all stations with CI or AZ network code will be shown.
-
Sensor Types - Sensor types are grouped into broadband (bb / BB), short period (sp / SP), or strong motion (sm / SM). Select sensor types of interest, then press Submit button to show stations with this type of sensor. Choosing multiple types displays a merged view of sensors, e.g., if “Strong Motion” and “Broadband” checkboxes are selected, map will show stations with broadband or strong motion sensors. You must select at least one sensor type. Select all sensor types to not filter by sensor type..
-
Asset Types - There are 3 Asset types: ContWf (continuous waveforms), TrigWf (waveforms windowed around seismic events only), or Phases(seismic phase arrivals of events in SCSN catalog). Select asset types of interest, then press Submit button to show stations with this type of asset. Choosing multiple types displays a merged view of assets, e.g., if “ConftWf” and “TrigWf” checkboxes are selected, map will show stations with both these asset types. You must select at least one asset type. To not filter search by asset, select all asset types.
-
Online sometime between - Use this to limit your search to stations that had data (asset types) online within a specific time range. If a date field is not populated then search on that end is unbounded. For example, no End Date shows any stations that were installed after the Start Date. Not providing either date is an error condition. Date format is YYYY-MM-DD. All dates are in UTC.
-
Submit Button - Press to display selected stations on map. Be sure to fill out criteria in Control Panel before pressing Submit button.
-
Reset Button - Press to reset selections in Control Panel. Will not reset last map view.
-
Station List allows you to search stations and highlight a selected station on the map and in the Station List table, and displays a list of stations with their station code, network code, and sensor type(s):
-
# of stations retrieved: Shows the number of stations displayed on the map.
-
Download as CSV: Click on this URL to download displayed station list in CSV.
-
Search for station: Enter a station code or partial station code, and from the resulting drop-down list, select your target station. The map will then generate a pop-up info bubble over the station, as the Station table below the Search box highlights that station’s entry and presents it at the top of the list. If you click other stations on the list, the map will generate a pop-up info bubble over your new choice, and the new choice will be highlighted. The Search box contents will stay unchanged until you use it again.
-
Station List table - You can skip using the Search for station box, and scroll through the list of stations to view their network and sensor types. If you click on an entry, a pop-up info bubble displays on the map, showing the FDSN station code, FDSN network code, and description of site. The table will bump up your selection to the top of the list, where you can see its FDSN station code, FDSN network code, and sensor type (if more than one type, they are displayed on the same line separated by commas).
Map
Displays the networks and sensor types you select in Control Panel, and the stations you select in the Stations List menu.
-
+/- icon - At upper left of map, click the plus and minus signs to zoom in (+) and zoom out (-) of the map. You can also “grab” the map and move it around by click-holding the mouse pointer on the map, then moving your mouse around.
-
Overlay icon - Click the overlay icon to control which map overlay is displayed on screen. Select between “Topographic,” “Gray,” “Streets,” and “Satellite.”
-
Toggle full screen mode - Click the to display app in full screen. When in full screen mode, click on to display app in normal screen mode.
-
Legend box - Shows which stations are CI on the map and which are non-CI stations. Click “x” on corner of Legend box to remove from map. Restore Legend box by clicking “Display Legend” checkbox in Control Panel.
-
Map markers - The popup info bubble that appears when a marker is clicked shows the following information:
- Net code
- Station code
- Short description
- Latitude, longitude and elevation
- Types of sensors installed i.e Broadband, Strong Motion or Short Period
- Links to data availability web service for both continuous and triggered waveform data
