June 9, 1994 Weekly Earthquake Report for Southern California ------------------------------------------------ June 2 - 8, 1994 Prepared by: Kate Hutton, Seismological Laboratory (kate@bombay.gps.caltech.edu) Lucy Jones, U.S. Geological Survey California Institute of Technology This document is a commentary on current seismic activity. The earthquakes discussed have been detected and processed automatically. All epicenters and magnitudes have been reviewed to exclude obvious blunders; however, they must still be considered preliminary. For further information, please contact the authors or the Caltech Public Relations Office at 818-395-6326. For daily updates, call our Earthquake Information Hotline: 818-395-6977. -------------------------------- This week's Report covers the time period from midnight Thursday morning, June 2, Pacific Daylight Time, to midnight Wednesday night, June 8, Pacific Daylight Time. We recorded 372 earthquakes this week. The seismicity this week was "more of the same". The largest quake was one of the three Northridge aftershocks that were felt, a M3.1 on Sunday evening. The other two were: a M3.0 on Saturday afternoon, near Newhall, and a M2.9 on Monday morning, near San Fernando. At least one insomniac in the Inland Empire felt a M2.5, near Loma Linda, in the wee hours of Tuesday morning. The most scientifically interesting event to be felt in the area this week actually occurred in Bolivia! Yes, Bolivia. At 5:33 pm PDT on Wednesday (00:33 GMT on June 9), a large quake (body wave magnitude 7.8, moment magnitude 8.2) occurred there, at 600 km depth. According to Dr. Kanamori (Director of the Seismo- logical Laboratory), it was the largest deep-focus earthquake this century. Deep focus earthquakes tend to not cause much damage, since no place on the Earth's surface is near the rupture, but they tend to be felt over a very wide area. In Wednesday's case, the National Earthquake Information Service received calls from many areas of the United States, and the quake was felt by at least one seismologist at Caltech. For further information about this unusual occurrance, contact the National Earthquake Information Service at 303-273-8500. The table lists the quakes that were M2.0 or larger in the central part of the coverage area. Times are local times; if you want Greenwich Mean Time, add 7 hrs, to the Daylight Time listed. Major faults are marked, as well as the metropolitan areas of Los Angeles (L.A.), Palm Springs (P.S.), San Diego (S.D.), and Santa Barbara (S.B.). The circles denote the earthquakes, the size of the circle indicating the magnitude.
