November 10, 1994 Weekly Earthquake Report for Southern California ------------------------------------------------ November 3 - 9, 1994 Prepared by: Kate Hutton, Seismological Laboratory (kate@bombay.gps.caltech.edu) Lucy Jones, U.S. Geological Survey California Institute of Technology This document is a commentary on current seismic activity. The earthquakes discussed have been detected and processed automatically. All epicenters and magnitudes have been reviewed to exclude obvious blunders; however, they must still be considered preliminary. For daily updates, call our Earthquake Information Hotline: 818-395-6977. -------------------------------- This week's Report covers the time period from midnight Thursday morning, November 3, Pacific Standard Time, to midnight Wednesday night, November 9, Pacific Standard Time. We recorded 365 earthquakes of M1.0 or larger this week. The level of seismicity for the week was typical of the past few months. There were 4 M3.0 or larger events. The two largest events were in the San Jacinto Fault zone near Idyllwild: a M3.8 Monday morning and a M3.7 Tuesday evening. Both were felt in the Palm Springs area. Since the San Jacinto is one of our most active faults, as far as small quakes are concerned, this is by no means unusual. An M3.0 occurred in the Big Bear area, about 28 minutes before the M3.8 Idyllwild quake on Monday morning. It was felt. Although this quake was close to the aftershock zone of the '92 Big Bear quake, it wasn't quite in it, so it can't be classified as an aftershock. The fourth M3 quake was a M3.0 Landers aftershock late Monday night, too far north of Yucca Valley to be noticed by the public. A number of very small quakes occurred in the greater Los Angeles area and the Inland Empire, but all were too small to feel. The table lists the quakes this week that were M2.0 or larger in the central part of the coverage area. Times are local times; if you want Greenwich Mean Time, add 7 hrs to the Pacific Daylight Time or 8 hrs to the Pacific Standard Time listed. Table 1 ------- Date Time N Lat. W Long.
