December 1, 1994 Weekly Earthquake Report for Southern California ------------------------------------------------ November 22 - 30, 1994 Prepared by: Kate Hutton, Seismological Laboratory (kate@bombay.gps.caltech.edu) Lucy Jones, U.S. Geological Survey California Institute of Technology This document is a commentary on current seismic activity. The earthquakes discussed have been detected and processed automatically. All epicenters and magnitudes have been reviewed to exclude obvious blunders; however, they must still be considered preliminary. For further information, please contact the authors or the Caltech Public Relations Office at 818-395-6326. For daily updates, call our Earthquake Information Hotline: 818-395-6977. -------------------------------- This week's Report covers the time period from midnight Tuesday morning, November 22, Pacific Standard Time, to midnight Wednesday night, November 30, Pacific Standard Time. Because of the Thanksgiving holiday, last week's report was porduced early, causing this week's report to cover an unusually long time period. We recorded 344 earthquakes of M1.0 or larger during the 9-day period covered. This week's seismicity was typical of the past few months. The largest event was a M3.5 along the eastern edge of the Coast Ranges, near Taft, which is west of Bakersfield. It was felt. There were three more M3.0's: one in the eastern Mojave Desert (Thursday afternoon), one near Yucca Valley (Friday after- noon), and one near Hemet (early Sunday morning). Surprisingly, in the case of the last two mentioned, we got not calls. A M2.9 Northridge aftershock was felt, early this past Tuesday afternoon. The table lists the quakes this week that were M2.0 or larger in the central part of the coverage area. Times are local times; if you want Greenwich Mean Time, add 7 hrs to the Pacific Daylight Time or 8 hrs to the Pacific Standard Time listed. Table 1 ------- Date Time N Lat. W Long.
