January 26, 1995 Weekly Earthquake Report for Southern California ------------------------------------------------ January 19 - 25, 1995 Prepared by: Kate Hutton, Seismological Laboratory (kate@bombay.gps.caltech.edu) Lucy Jones, U.S. Geological Survey California Institute of Technology For further information, please contact the authors or the Caltech Public Relations Office at 818-395-6326. For daily updates, call our Earthquake Information Hotline: 818-395-6977. -------------------------------- This week's Report covers the time period from midnight Thursday morning, January 19, Pacific Standard Time, to midnight Wednesday night, January 25, 1995, Pacific Standard Time. We recorded 292 earthquakes of M1.0 or larger during the 7-day period covered. Although the overall number of earthquakes this week was not outstanding, people have been busy feeling them. The week's largest event was a M3.5 early Tuesday morning, about halfway between Riverside and Moreno Valley. It was felt, possibly as far away as Pasadena. Probably the second most excitement was due to the swarm of quakes north of Big Bear Lake beginning Saturday night and lasting into Monday. There were six of these that were felt (M2.8 and larger); the largest one was M3.1. They were Landers/Big Bear aftershocks occurring geographically between the main aftershock zone of the summer of '92 and a M5.3 in November of '92. A very small quake (M2.4) on Saturday afternoon was felt in the La Cienega area, north of the I10 and southwest of the La Brea tar pits. It was not an aftershock. A M2.7 early Wednesday morning was an aftershock, however, of the Northridge quake. It was felt in the San Fernando area. The table lists the quakes this week that were M2.0 or larger in the central part of the coverage area. Times are local times; if you want Greenwich Mean Time, add 7 hrs to the Pacific Daylight Time or 8 hrs to the Pacific Standard Time listed. Table 1 ------- Date Time N Lat. W Long. A map of southern California showing the earthquakes recorded during the past week by the Caltech/USGS Seismic Network. Coastlines (thick lines) and major faults (thin lines), are marked, as well as the metropolitan areas of Los Angeles (L.A.), Palm Springs (P.S.), San Diego (S.D.), and Santa Barbara (S.B.). The circles denote the earthquakes, the size of the circle indicating the magnitude.
