SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SEISMOGRAPHIC NETWORK A Cooperative Project of Caltech and the U.S. Geological Survey November 9, 1995 Weekly Earthquake Report for Southern California ------------------------------------------------ November 2 - 8, 1995 Prepared by: Kate Hutton, Seismological Laboratory (kate@bombay.gps.caltech.edu) Lucy Jones, U.S. Geological Survey California Institute of Technology For further information, please contact the authors or the Caltech Public Relations Office at 818-395-6326. For daily updates, call our Earthquake Information Hotline: 818-395-6977. -------------------------------- This week's Report covers the time period from midnight Thursday morning, November 2, Universal Time (ie. GMT), to midnight Wednesday night, November 8, 1995, Universal Time. In local time, the period of coverage is from 4 p.m., November 1 to 4 p.m., November 8 Pacific Standard Time. Please note that using a GMT time block constitutes a change in procedure for the Weekly Report, beginning this month. The reason for the change is so that we don't have to work all night on Wednesdays to finish the processing. Event times will still be tabulated in local time. We detected and processed 638 earthquakes during the 7-day period covered. The largest quake of the week was the M3.4 on Friday afternoon, in the Puente Hills between Whittier and La Habra Heights. It was fairly widely felt, by many people as far away as Pasadena, but not much public or press interest was generated. Is the populace finally realizing that M3 quakes are very common in California and not much to get excited about? The Puente Hills quake had a thrust focal mechanism, on an east-northeast striking plane. As is usually the case with quakes of this size, it cannot be unabiguously assigned to any particular fault. It occurred about 5 miles southeast of the October 1, 1987 Whittier Narrows quake (Mw5.9), definitely outside the aftershock zone and outside the reasonable time frame for aftershocks. So it's not an aftershock. Nothing else particularly exciting occurred. The Ridgecrest, Northridge and Landers aftershock zones continued their activity as usual. The table lists the quakes this week that were M2.0 or larger in the central part of the coverage area. Times are local times; if you want Greenwich Mean Time, add 7 hrs to the Pacific Daylight Time or 8 hrs to the Pacific Standard Time listed. Table 1 ------- Date Time N Lat. W Long.
