SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA SEISMOGRAPHIC NETWORK A Cooperative Project of Caltech and the U.S. Geological Survey July 3, 1996 Weekly Earthquake Report for Southern California ------------------------------------------------ June 27 - July 2, 1996 Prepared by: Kate Hutton, Seismological Laboratory (kate@bombay.gps.caltech.edu) Lucy Jones, U. For daily updates, call our Earthquake Information Hotline: 818-395-6977. -------------------------------- This week's Report covers the time period from midnight Thursday morning, June 27, Universal Time (ie. GMT), to midnight Tuesday night, July 2, Universal Time. In local time, the period of coverage is from 5 p.m., June 26, Pacific Daylight Time, to 5 p.m., July 2, Pacific Daylight Time. Because of the upcoming holiday, the Weekly Report is being issued one day early. We detected and processed 197 earthquakes during the 6-day period covered. The low seismicity continues. In fact, there were only two events reported felt this week. The first was a M3.0 in the Loma Linda area on Friday night, near the prolific intersection of the Banning and San Jacinto Faults. Whoever felt the second one had to be paying very close attention. It was a M2.1 in the La Crescenta area late in the afternoon on Tuesday. There was a minor swarm in the Cerro Prieto area in northern Baja, Mexico, which can be seen easily on the map. Only the swarm members about M2.5 are listed in the table. Table 1 lists the quakes this week that were M2.0 or larger in the central part of the coverage area. Times are local times; if you want Greenwich Mean Time, add 7 hrs to the Pacific Daylight Time or 8 hrs to the Pacific Standard Time listed. Table 1 ------- Date Time N Lat. W Long.
